Life Introduction of P. V. Narasimha Rao

Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao (especially known as P.V.) was an Indian lawyer and politician who served as India’s 9th Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996. The decision to make him prime minister was politically important as he was the first prime minister from the non-Hindi speaking region, who lived in the southern part of India.

While working as the Prime Minister, he worked in many departments. Narasimha Rao was also instrumental in abolishing the license raj in the industrial sector. He is also called the “father of improvement in the Indian economy” in India, seeing his works.

The future Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh had also followed the measures laid out by the Rao while keeping the economic plans set by the Rao government. Along with this, he has also done many things in ending the license raj imposed by Rajiv Gandhi’s government.

In a historic economic change, he made Dr. Manmohan Singh the Economic Minister. It was only by Rao’s mandate that Dr. Manmohan Singh established India’s economy globally and made many changes in the International Monetary Fund Schemes so that they could improve the Aarti system of the country.

According to Natwar Singh, “Unlike Nehru, he had deep knowledge in Sanskrit.” Nehru was very angry with Narasimha’s nature. Nehru had considerable knowledge of the spiritual and religious roots of India.

The eleventh president of India, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam while describing Rao told him that he is “a patriot who believes that the nation is always bigger than politics”. Rao had also prepared Kalam to conduct the Nuclear Test in 1996, but could not do so due to general elections in the same year. This test was later conducted by the Vajpayee government in the NDA government.

Rao’s prime ministerial tenure had proved very influential in the history of India. After becoming the Prime Minister, he was running Jawaharlal Nehru in a mixed economic system in India and he also made the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) the main party of the country as the Congress had ruled for most of the time since independence in the country.

After this, when the Kalyan Singh of the BJP was the Chief Minister of the state in Uttar Pradesh, the demolition of Babri Masjid to Ayodhya also happened during his tenure, at that time it was the biggest dispute between Hindus and Muslims after independence.

Rao died in 2004 after a heart attack in Delhi. He was cremated in Hyderabad. P. V. Narasimha Rao was a versatile human being and was interested in many subjects such as literature and computer software. He spoke about 17 languages.

The early life

P.V. Narasimha Rao was a person of humble social origin. He was born into a Niyogi family near Laknapalli in Narasampet Go in the Warangal district but was later adopted and then moved to Vangra village of Bhimdevarapalli Mandal in Karimnagar district of Telangana. At that time, Telangana was a part of Hyderabad.

His father P. Sitaram Rao and mother Rukminiamma were from the Agrarian family. Commonly known as P.V., he completed his primary education in Katakuru village of Bhimdevarapalli Mandal in Karimnagar district, where he lived in the house of his relative Gabbeta Radhakishan Rao and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Arts College, Osmania University Used to study He later went on to study Hislop College, now under Nagpur University. While living there he completed a master’s degree in law.

Rao’s mother tongue was Telugu and he also had a good grasp of Marathi language. Along with this, he also spoke English, French, Arabic, Spanish, German and Persian languages along with the other eight languages (Hindi, Oria, Bengali, Gujrati, Kannada, Sanskrit, Tamil and Urdu languages).

His Chulat Bhai Pamulparthy was Sadashiv Rao. Both Narasimha and Sadashiv Rao used to write articles under their surname Jai-Vijay.

Narasimha Rao has three sons and five daughters. His eldest son P.V. Rangarao has also been the Minister of Education in Kotla Vijay Bhaskar Reddy’s cabinet and MLA twice from Hanamkonda Assembly Constituency in Warangal District.

His second son P.V. Rajeshwar Rao was also a Member of Parliament in the 11th Lok Sabha (15 May 1996 – 4 December 1997). He was elected from Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency.

Political Career of P. V. Narasimha Rao

Narasimha Rao was an active political leader during the Indian independence campaign and was also a member of the Indian National Congress. Even today, his tenure as Chief Minister is remembered in Andhra Pradesh, as he made many important changes in land rights in the Telangana region which proved to be influential.

In 1972, he also held a national debate in Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi’s cabinet on planetary, security, and foreign issues. Along with this, it is also said that Narasimha Rao was accompanied by Zail Singh in the presidential candidate of India in 1982.

Narasimha had retired from politics in 1991. But after the assassination of Congress President Rajiv Gandhi, he was forced to return to politics. It was due to him that the Congress won the most seats in the 1991 election.

And till now Nehru is the first Prime Minister outside the Gandhi family who served the country by becoming Prime Minister of the country for five years. Also, he was the first person to become Prime Minister from South India and the Andhra Pradesh state of India.

Rao could not take part in general elections after this, but he participated in Nandyal elections. He won about 5 lakh votes in Nandyal’s election. His record was also recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. At that time, his cabinet also included Sharad Pawar, who was himself a strong prime ministerial candidate as Defense Minister.

With this, he surprised everyone by making future Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from outside politics as India’s Finance Minister. Along with this, he appointed Subramaniaswamy as a member of the opposition party and also made the chairman of Labor Standard and International Trade.

After this, he also sent the leader of the opposition party, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, to appear in the UN meeting held in Geneva.

Death of P. V. Narasimha Rao

Rao suffered a heart attack on 9 December 2004 and was soon admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Science and died at the age of 83, 14 days after being admitted. His family wanted his funeral to be done in Delhi, Rao’s son Prabhakar had also told Manmohan Singh that “Delhi is his workplace”.

But as per Sonia Gandhi’s decision, her body was sent to Hyderabad. His body was not allowed to be brought to the AICC building in Delhi.

After this, his body was kept in Jubilee Hall, Hyderabad. His funeral was also attended by the tenth Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, and he was accompanied by Planetary Minister Shivraj Patil and Bharatiya Janata Party President LK Advani and Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and other politicians. Paying him respect, the Telangana government also declared a Telangana state celebration in 2014 on his birthday.
